I was well into educating a new patient during a visit in the family medicine practice I worked then started to explain how she had every reason to question why her body ached or why she felt so tired all the time when tears began to swell in her eyes.
Concerned, I stopped myself from going on and quickly apologized asking, “Did I say something that hurt you?”
“No”, she replied. “It’s just that no one has ever understood me before or explained to me these things the way you just did. I go to the doctors, and they make me feel like I’m crazy- so thank you.”
Has this ever happened to you? Gone to the doctors and had your complaints dismissed or felt like the practitioner didn’t really care, or worse made you feel like you were crazy?
Well, it happened to me. I remember sitting in the rheumatologist office with tears from frustration that I was given no answers for the body aches and weakness I was experiencing, no laboratory values or tests to pinpoint what was wrong, in fact, the rheumatologist seemed annoyed at my suffering! My advice? Don’t stop seeking answers - trust your instincts. Seek medical attention from a practitioner who is willing to go the distance with you and use both a medical and holistic approach to help you look and feel yourself again.
